Tell us a little about yourself:

I am Jeff Sapire, born in South Africa, living in Israel, aged 58. I have been interested in

photography since my teens. I dropped it for many years, but came back a few years ago. Digital photography brought me back. I didn't like a darkroom with all the chemicals, and enjoy computer processing.

Are you an amateur or a pro photographer?

I would say that I am an amateur enthusiast.

What do you like to photograph?

I like outdoor and abstract photography. I am pretty keen on photographing old stone, I live near Jerusalem.

What is in your photography kit?

Years ago, I was really into equipment, today I believe that the eye is more important than the equipment. I spent some time recently photographing with a simple "point & shoot" and have recently upgraded to a Sony NEX 5n which I like very much. It is small and functionally very much like an SLR.

What's your favorite lens?

I don't have a favourite lens as such, I am using the (18-55) equiv 30mm to 80mm in 35mm format. Am planning on purchasing a 35mm fast standard lens which is small and light for low light and "point & shoot" style photography.

Any favorite photographer(s)?

My favourite photographers change over time. I remember being spellbound by Ansel Adams, very impressed with Elliot Erwitt, and recently was very impressed with Steve McCurry in the Pirelli calendar.

Which is your own favorite picture?

See picture at the bottom of this page. I think it is visually very powerful and a bit magical... I really enjoy photography because it gets me out walking, which I love, It teaches me to really see, to observe, and not just to look, Creativity gives me great reward, And it gives me satisfaction for my "techie" needs, fiddling on the computer.

What is your dream?

My dream is of course to take that really great shot...

Any advice or great tips to share?

Advice... Don't get trapped by your equipment, changing lenses a lot and fiddling too much can make you miss some really good shots. There is amazing quality equipment which comes in small packages these days. Remember that it is the eye that takes the photo, not the camera...
