Tell us a little about yourself:

My name is Kay Gaensler and I live in Wiesbaden, Germany. I am seriously into photography since 2006. As an engineer with a degree in architecture I worked a lot with Photoshop and Illustrator to create visualizations and got the ground of retouching covered. When moving from Wiesbaden, Germany to Paris, France in 2006 I bought a Point and Shoot. In any minute of spare time, I strolled through the foreign streets of Paris equipped with my camera making pictures. And so I got addicted to photography. In January 2008 I switched to a dslr and saw a HDR Tutorial. From that moment I was hooked and started to experiment with HDR a lot. During that period of time I developed my own style and techniques not only for HDR.

Are you an amateur or a pro photographer?

I'm a semi-professional Photographer.

What do you like to photograph?

My favorite subjects are Architecture, Land- and Cityscapes as well as cars, especially antique ones.

What is in your photography kit?

Right now I'm shooting with a Canon 5D MkIII and a Canon 40D as my backup. Lenses are an 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II, a EF 24-105MM f/4L IS USM, a 50mm f/1.8 and a EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS

What's your favorite lens?

My favorite lens is the 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II because I love wide-angle landscapes and there is no better lens on a full frame DSLR for that.

Any favorite photographer(s)?

The photographers who I most admire are, in no particularly order:
Trey Ratcliff, Arlo West and Peter Lik

Which is your own favorite picture?

This is changing constantly. Right now it is a shot of the Astoria-Megler Bridge in Oregon. (See picture at the bottom of the page) I love the mood of the early morning blue hour and the silhouette of the bridge.

What is your dream?

My dream would be to become a early bird. This is the time where I took my best images and it is so hard for me to stay up at 5am.

Any advice or great tips to share?

My advise would be: Stay curious! Curiosity let you find new places and let you learn new techniques.
